Kedarkantha peak trek is one the most sought winter trek in India. A perfect peak climb for beginners. Kedar means lord shiva and kantha means the neck. This trek is perfect for beginners and also acts as a training ground for seasoned trekkers. People tend to go for Kedarkantha trek as it usually have powder snow from mid-December to late April and has one of the finest summit climb in winters which only very few winter trek possess.

The distance to Sankri which acts as a base camp or the starting point for the trek from Dehradun is around 199 km. The travel from Dehradun to Sankri is itself an adventure. Sankri is a remote village located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.

How to reach Sankri?
The distance between Dehradun to Sankri is around 199km. You can either reach Sankri from Dehradun either by public transport or by your private vehicle. The first bus leaves around 4:50 am and the second leaves around 7 am. You need to board this bus just opposite to Grand hotel outside the bus station.
If you don’t want to take a bus or arrive late at Dehradun, you can opt in for shared taxi which leaves at around 7:30 am and takes about 8-9 hours. The fare for shared taxi cost about 600INR to 700INR. The best route for a private vehicle to reach Sankri is Dehradun- Vikasnagar- Selakui- Naugau- Purola- Netwar – Sankri.

How the weather is in Sankri?
Sankri is a hamlet located in the Garhwal Himalayan ranges. It is located at around 6500 ft above the sea level. The temperature remains pleasant during the summers which range from 12 degree Celsius to 25 degree Celsius. Temperature during winters can dip up to -5 degree Celsius. During winters Sankri experiences frequent snowfall sometimes with a little drizzle.

Fitness required for Kedarkantha Trek?
Hiking and trekking is a physically demanding sports and require you to be in a good shape. Considering the BMI index you should be in a range of 18.5-24 but is not true in all the scenarios. If you are into lifting heavy weights then higher BMI index can work if you are carrying a suitable muscle mass.
You should be able to cover 5km in less than 45 minutes for Kedarkantha trek. This can be attained quite easily with few weeks of practice.
